This holy mountain lies at the
Southern extremity of the
Aravali Range. Mount Abu is
referred to as the son of
Himalayas. It was seat of the
great sage vasishta from whose
sacrificial fire four Rajputs
are said to have emerged. Since
it has been the penance – place
of rishis and munis.
Rajasthan’s
only hill station and major
piligrimate center. It is
detached completely from it by a
narrowing valley and the highest
point. Latitude at 1290 meters
above sea level. It is
approximately 30 kilometers in
legth and 12 kms in breadhnd
with a plateau of 16 kms in
length and 3 to 6 kms in width.
Its highest peak Guru Shikhar is
56 53 feet above sea – level and
it is the highest point in
between the Himalay in North and
the Nilagiris in South. Mount
Abu, Owing to its good rainfall,
has the richest vegetation in
Rajasthan. A wide variety of
trees and shrubs can be viewed
as one drives up to Mount Abu.
The following trees, notably
flame of the forest and shrubs
make the area seem like a
Gigantic garden.

a holy retreat for many sages
and seers. And one of the most
sacred Rites. A yagya was
performed here by sage Vashistha
for the purification of the
ancient fighting caste, the
Kashatriyas. An Elaborate
sacrificial ceremony was held at
the holy Gaumukhya and from the
mystical fire were born the
Agnikula clans of CHAUHANS,
SOLANKIS, PARMARS and PRATIHANS.
These claims were later to have
important impact on the history
of this Region. Till about the
11th century Mount Abu was an
important Vaishnav and shiva
piligrim center. But is today
recognized more as a Jain
pilgrim center.
Where as
during the British Rule, this
place was nearly unhabited
gradually its population has
increased. The famous Greek
Ambassador Megasthanese, in the
court of the then Emperor
Chandra Gupta too has referred
to about this mountain. During
the British Rule the English got
on lease a land at Abu from
Maharao Shiv Singh to establish
here the Sanatorium. Later in
1917 AD. The British purchased
for ever and in exchang they
agreed to pay a sum of rupees
Twenty seven thousands. In due
course of time after India’s
freedom on 1st November,1956 at
the time of merger of Rajasthan.
Delwara Jain
temples built between the
11thand 13th century the world
famous dulwara Jain temples on
the road going through the post
office and Raj Bhavan. These
temples are very old. Their
carvings architecture and
decoration are beyond
description. In whole of India,
except the Taj Mahal at Agra,
there is nothing equal to these
temples as regards to sculptures
art. These temple are built of
white marbles, Lacs of Rupeese
were spent in bringing this
marble on the hilly rangs.
Dilwara Temples are a
acompositer cluster of 5
temples, the first two being the
most popular on account of
exuberant ornamentation and
details of marble carvings.
