۞ About Jaipur

Jaipur, the colourful capital of a richly colourful state, is a highly distinctive planned city, made all the more attractive by the pink wash that most buildings are periodically given. It is deservedly included on the popular tourist 'Golden Triangle' of Delhi-Jaipur-Agra. It has some fine museums in the atmospheric Old City with its. bazars, palaces and havelis, as well as a couple of forts and Amber nearby which an well worth exploring.

The city was born out of the vision and prudent urban planning of the 18th-century Rajput leader Maharaja Sawai jai Singh II, who ruled the region from 1699 to 1744.

Having established political stability in his territories by the mid-1720s, jai Singh decided to move the capital from its hillside fort in Amber. With the help of renowned Bengali architect Vidyadhar Chakravarti, the maharaja built the walled city of Jaipur, carefully laying out Jaipur according to the mathematical grid model of the ancient Hindu map of the universe.

The British presence during the 19th century brought about a drastic cosmetic transformation; to celebrate Prince Albert's visit in 1856, the city painted itself pink. The city was dubbed the "Pink City," and both the name and the color wash stuck.
