The
gateway leads to the courtyard known
variously as the Diwan-i-Am, the
Sarbato Bhadra or the Diwan-i- Khas
Chowk. Today the building in its
centre is known as the Diwan-i-Khas
(circa 1730). Originally the
Diwan-i-Am, it was reduced to the
hall of private audience (Diwan-i-Khas)
when the new Diwan-i-Am was built to
its south east at the end of the
18th century. The courtyard itself
reflects the overwhelming influence
of Mughal style, despite the
presence of some Hindu designs. In
the Diwan-i-Khas (in Sanskrit,
Sarbato Bhadra) are two huge silver
urns used by Sawai Madho Singh for
carrying Ganga water to England.
