At the head of the enclosed valley in the dry rugged hills of the northern Aravallis, Samode stands on a former caravan route. Today, the sleepy village, with its local artisans producing printed cloth and glass bangles, nestles within its old walls. The old painted havelis are still full of character.
The Palace, which dominates the village, is fabulously decorated with 300 – year old wall painting (hunting scenes, floral motifs etc) which still look almost new. Around the first floor of the Darbar Hall are magnificent alcoves decorated with mirrors like Shish mahal and jail screens through which the royal ladies would have looked down into the grand jewel-like Darbar Hall. |
