As Mughal power crumbled Rao
Pratap Singhji of Macheri founded Alwar as
his capital in 1771. He shook off ]at power
over the region and rebelled against Jaipur
suzerainty making Alwar an independent
state. His successors lent military
assistance to the British in their battles
against the Marathas in 1803 AD, and in
consequence gained the support of the
colonial power. The Alwar royals were
flamboyant and kept a fleet of custom-made
cars (including a throne car and a golden
limousine), and collected solid silver
furniture and attractive walking sticks. |
