The Very thought of Kerala conjures
images of pristine beaches,
picture-book sunsets, coconut
forests, exotic seafood, serene
backwaters and sciences of Yoga,
Ayurveda and Naturopathy. At Surya
Samudra we have compressed all this
into 20 sylvan acres and added our
own touch of efficient hospitality.
It's an experience that will stay
with you long after you leave.
We are lucky Christopher Colombus or
any other explorer did not reach our
shore...or we would have been just
'another' destination! Discover a
unique holiday experience through
the Surya Samudra, the Truly
Heritage Resort and Spa in South
Kerala.
Surya Samudra began as a single
octagonal stone house thirty miles
from the tip of India and just a few
minutes from the historic Vizhinjam
harbour (pronounced as Virinyam).
Today, it has grown into an
eco-friendly beach resort with 23
houses spread over nearly 20 acres
of private space and each house
comes with a luxuriant foliage of
coconut, palm, bamboo, banana, wild
shrubs, flowers and the chirping of
birds.

Cottages
The Banyan tree is sacrosanct, in
God's own country, Kerala. And what
better way to begin your journey of
discovery, than with the traditional
Indian welcome in its auspicious
shade, in the courtyard of the Surya
Samudra.
Whole tharawads (traditional Kerala
houses) have been purchased and
reassembled here as cottages. They
have been converted into elevated
structures, keeping in mind the need
for free flow of space to facilitate
unhindered movement and natural
ventilation. Windows serve as doors
while writing desks face the sea.
'Bath gardens' are open air,
protected by the slopes on all sides
and each house has an open-air
cafeteria.
The 21 private cottages of Surya
Samudra recreate the enigma of a
regal heritage that dates back over
three centuries. Whole illams
(traditional Kerala wooden houses)
with their inricate carvings have
been reassembled here, to revive the
romance of a bygone era.
¨ Each
dwelling has a lush green private
garden,
¨ A
verandah,
¨ A
luxuriant open air 'bath-garden'
¨ Offers
a breath taking view of the great
outdoors.

turquoise infinity pool, imbued with
laid back Mediterranean charms. Its
magnificent sculptures have been
carved out of the natural rockface.
by the fabled temple sculptors of
Mamallampuram. Thanks to a moderate
tropical climate, the pool is open
year round. And its landspaced
surrounding is a sun bather's
paradise. Just perfect for a cool
dip...a lazy nap...
a sip and a bite... or for the rare
luxury of simply doing nothing.
Various art forms of Kerala, ranging
from Classical dances like Bharata
Natyam and Kathakali to the martial
art Kalaripayattu can be arranged on

The ancient Indian natural system of
medicine, Ayurveda and Yoga, can be
tried, to have a very special

Ayurveda
The word Ayurveda is composed of two
terms. 'Ayus' means 'life' and
'Veda' means the knowledge or
'Science'. Thus, Ayurveda means the
science of life. Ayurveda lays a
great deal of emphasis upon the
maintenance of positive health of an
individual.
Kerala's equable humid climate,
natural abundance of forests (with a
wealth of herbs and medicinal
plants), and the cool monsoon season
(June - November) are best suited
for Ayurveda's curative and
restorative packages. Traditional
texts reveal that the monsoon is the
best season for rejuvenation
programmes. The atmosphere remains
dust-free and cool, opening the
pores of the body to the maximum,
making it most receptive to herbal
oils and therapy.
Surya Samudra has an ayurvedic
massage centre and a yoga centre
whose treatments customers swear by.
Niraamaya - The serene
ayurvedic spa with its acclaimed
doctors and masseurs offer a vast
variety of natural therapies and
massages for health, beauty and
longevity. The landscape of the
resort is a rich repository of rare
herbs and medicinal shrubs.
Surya Samudra keeps Kerala's
ayurvedic medicine alive in an
uninterrupted tradition on a
luxurious scale. After a
consultation with the doctor, one
can choose from a variety of
soothing treatments. An expert
massage using traditional medicinal
oils prepared from natural
ingredients by the masseur can be
enjoyed. Excellent results with all
types of pains in the joints and the
muscles, and with prophylactics and
relief from rheumatism and arthrosis
have been seen.
