Thekkady, a premier place with tremendous t ourist
importance in the Kerala map is at a safe distance
of only 4 km. from Kumily. The world famous
Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary and Tiger Reserves
are at Thekkady. This is spread over an area
of 777 sq.kms. and surrounded by an artificial
lake of 2 sq.kms., the Periyar Lake.
Boating through this placid lake provides a
rare excitement of watching herds of wild elephants
and other rare species of animals in close quarters.
Such a cruise either at sunrise or sunset will
certainly be a fascinating experience.
The magnificent Idukki Arch Dam, set against
densely wooded hills and valleys studded with
rushing streams, is only 65 km. away. This dam
is surrounded by the absolute wilderness of
Idukki Wild Life Sanctuary. Peerumedu, Munnar,
Sabarimala etc. are other places around with
great tourist importance.
Thekkady (Kumily)
This cute little hill station on Western Ghats
is renowned for trading of hill produces, particularly
the spices. It is also a transit point to Madhurai,
the famous temple town in Tamilnadu. Connected
by road, Kumily is 109 km. from Kottayam, 200
km. from Kochi and 110 km. from Kerala's most
picturesque hill station, Munnar.
