Srinagar

The capital of Kashmir stands on Dal Lake and the Jhelum River and is the transport hub for the valley and also the jumping off point for trips to Ladakh. Srinagar is a crowded, colourful city with a distinctly central Asian flavour. The people indeed look different from the rest of India and when you head south from Srinagar it is always referred to as 'returning to India'.

   Information & Orientation
Srinagar is initially a little confusing since Dal Lake, which is so much a part of the city, is such a strange lake it's actually three lakes, separated by dykes or 'floating gardens' and at times it's hard to tell where lake ends and land begins. On the lake there are houseboats that are definitely firmly attached to the bottom. And houses that look like they could simply float away. Most of the houseboats are at the southern end of the lake although you will also find them on the Jhelum River and north on Nagin Lake. The Jhelum River makes a loop around the main part of town and a canal connecting the river with Dal Lake converts that part of town into an island. Along the south of this 'Island' is the Bund, a popular walk. Here you will find the GPO and the handicrafts centre. The large Tourist Reception Centre is just north of the Bund and here the Tourist Office, Indian Airlines and the J&K Road Transport Corporation are Located together with accommodation units and a rather poor restaurant. The Kashmir Tourist Office is very poor. There are many restaurants, shops, travel agents and hotels in the island paart of town. More of the more modern part of Srinagar stretches away south of the jhelum while the older parts of town are and north-west of here.
