Jammu

  ۞ Information & Orientation
Jammu is actually two towns — the old town sits on a hilltop overlooking the river. Here you'll find most of the hotels and the Tourist Reception Centre where the Tourist Office is located and from where upper class buses depart for Kashmir. Note that the Tourist Office, typically for Kashmir, closes early in the evening and opens late in the morning, thus preventing most people, who only overnight in Jammu, from using it. down beside the hill is the bus station for buses to other parts of north India and for the lower class buses to Srinagar. Finallllv, several km away across the river is the new town of Jammu Tawi where the railway station is located.
  ۞ Things to see
The Raghunath Temple is in the centre of the city, only a short stroll from the Tourist Reception Centre. This large temple complex was built in 1835. Also centrally located the Rambireswar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, dates from 1883. Situated in the Gandhi Bhavan, by the New Secretariat, the Dogra Art Gallery has an important collection of miniature paintings including many from the locally renowned Basohli and Kangra schools. The gallery is open from 7.30 am to 1 pm in summer and from 11 am to 5 pm in winter but closed on Mondays. Admission is free. On the northern outskirts of town, just off the Srinagar road, is the Amar Mahal Palace, a curious example of French architecture. The palace museum has a family portrait gallery and another important collection of paintings.

  ۞ Places To Eat
The usual government tourist centre menu is available at the Tourist Reception Centre. Reasonable sort of food. The Cosmopolitan Hotels air-con restaurant is far superior to the hotel — good for a pleasant meal in cool surroundings and a cold beer. A few doors down the Premier has Chinese and Kashmiri food.
