large meadow of Gulmarg is 52 km
from Srinagar and at 2730 metres.
The name means 'meadow of flowers'
and in spring it's just that. This
is also an excellent trekking base
and in winter is also India's
premier skiing resort.

Outer Circular Walk: A circular road, 11
km in length, runs right round Gulmarg
through pleasant pine forests with
excellent views over the Kashmir Valley.
Nanga Parbat is visible to the north and
Haramukh and Sunset Peak to the south-east. Avantipur: 29 kms from Srinagar. Famous for rains of ancient temples believed to have been built in honour of the god Mahadeva. The temple built by Avantivaraman in 855-883 A.D. The architectural and artistic trends of the Karkota Dynasty. Yushmarg: 40 kms from Srinagar. A small open valley in the hills of the pir panjar range. Gaint pines. Accommodation at rest house. Aharbal: 51 kms. From Srinagar altitude 2,400 meters above sea level. It is famous for an impressive waterfall formed by river Veshav falling from a height of 24.4 meters. Kungwattan, a charming woodland meadow, is 8 kms poines can be hired to Kungwattan, there is no motorable road. Accommodation. Achabal: Situated 58 kms to the South of Srinagar altitude 1677 meters. The spring of Achabal was selected queen Nur-Jahan laid out the world famous garden Achabal in 1620 A.D. 140 m long and 135m broad. Once the pleasures ret, eat of the empress Nur Jahan. Jahengir’s son, ShahJahan, constructed cascades and aqueducts in straight lines through a fine garden (Between 16228-1657 A.D.), Is believed to be the source of the river Jhelum. Gardens surround vering, and the water source (with waters so clear you can see the fish swimming). Wuular Lake: 60 kms from Srinagar. Altidude 1580 meters. Built by Badshah (great king) sultan Jain-ul-Abidin in (1420-1470 A.D.) This great fresh water lake, the largest in India, is an important fetures of the hydrographic system of Kahmir. Acting as a flood reservoir its dimensions vary at different times of the year. Normally it is 19 kms by 10km and is spread over an area of about 125 sq-kms.
Verinag: 80 kms from Srinagar, altitude 1876 meters above sea level. The famous springs of Verning gardens built in 1620 A.D. by queen NurJahan. The spring here is reputed to be the chief source of the river Jhelum. Further to the east lie the remains of a pavilion and bathes built during the emperor ShahJahan period. Kokarnag: 70 kms from Srinagar, altitude 2012 meters. It is famous for the curative properties of its springs, it is also has a botanical garden with a variety of roses. Accommodation, Tourist Huts. Martand: 64 kms from Srinagar. Built in 724-760 A.D. by Laliladitya- mu-ktapida, a warrior king of Kashmir. The temple was devoted to the sun god, surya. Martand iis located on the top of a plateau, a bare 8 kms from the town of Anantnag. It is a medieval temple with a courtnyard, colon added and with the shrine in the center. It has 84 a sacred Hindu digit. Columns and affords a commanding view of the valley. Dachigam National Park: 21 kms from Srinagar, altitude 2,400 meters. Originally a royal game preserve, This sanctuary is now protected and provides shelter to the Himalayan black bear, brown bear, musk bear and the hangul or Kashmir stag. Tourists are required to obtain special permits from the Controller. Anantnag: 56 kms from Srinagar Anantnag, which is also a spring girft temple. It is visited on these Ashtamis by hindus living in continuous areas. A belief connected with these ancient shrines is that their water changes colour, according to the state of the society. It has been known to be come black before a disaster or calamity.
