Apart from two railway lines
which are both narrow gauge and hence rather
more 'fun' than 'transport', getting A
around Himachal Pradesh means taking a bus
unless you can afford a taxi. The two trains
run from Kalka, just north of Chandigarh, to
Simla and from Pathankot along the Kangra
Valley to Jogindarnargar. Himachal Pradesh
buses are generally the Indian norm slow,
crowded, uncomfortable and tiring. Things
are made a little worse by the mountainous
terrain, if you can manage to average 20 kph
on a bus trip you're doing well. Taxis are
readily available but rather expensive. One
way you can make a saving is to find a taxi
on a return trip in that case you can often
knock the price down a bit. Ask the people
running your hotel, they're often in the
know as to who is going where and when.
The HPTDC have a number of deluxe tourist
bus services. They often operate overnight.
