Shimla

۞About Shimla:

With its cool air, magnificant view, and lingering spirit of the Raj, shimla can leave visitors spellbound. A stroll along the Ride can be a daunting experience; Indian, Foreigeners, and monkeys all vie for space along broad street lined with Highland-esque horses. Once the summer capital of the British Empire, today's Shimla is a good place to stopover before heading to busier (or rougher) parts of the state. It is connected by a road to Kullu and Lahaul in the north, Kangra and  Chamba in the west, and the Kinnaur in the east. During May, Sep.,and Oct.,times when the town is free from snow and monsoonal downpors, the mountains, the mountain quite dissapears, and the area is flooded with Indian tourists and backpackers.

۞ How To Get There:

Trains:
Shimla is connected to Kalka via the narrow-gauge railway. From Kalka,  connections can be    made to: Ambala,  Amtitsar; Delhi.

Buses:
There are two bus stands in Simla. Main Station sends buses to: Chamba; Chandigarh.;Delhi;Dharamshala;Haridwar via Dehra Dun; Manalivia Kullu; Pathantkot.Rivoli Bus Stand sends buses to: Kalpa via Rampur, Jeuri, and Rekong-Peo; Rampur.

۞ Orientation :

Shimla stretches from Himachal Pradesh University in the West across a ride to Lakkar Bazaar, where many of the town’s Tibetan refugees live. Most major streets run from parallel to Mall Road from east to west, each at a different elevation. Trains and most buses arrive on Cart Road. Above Cart Rd. is the bazaar, and above the bazaar is Shimla’s main drag, The Mall, which is off-limits to motorized vehicles. The easiest (and laziest) way to get up and down is to take the tourist elevator on Cart Rd., just after the street turns south. For a workout, take any path or stairway leading up.At Scandal Corner, directly above the main bus stand, The Mall divides into a lower section and an upper section known as the Ridge, which becomes Lakkar Bazaar as it curves left beyond Christ Church.

۞ Sightseeing In Shimla :

It's a hike to the museum, but the collection is worth it. The first floor contains the remain of 2000-year-old-sculptures and specimens of Indo-Greek coinage unearthed in HP. On the second floor are a number of Kangra Pahari miniature paintings and works by contemporary artists. If you plan to hike up the Jakku Temple, “Hanuman Adoring Rama” is worth a look.

Jakhu Temple.
This red-and-yellow temple is at top of a 2455m hill and the 20min. walk to the summit can be surprisingly steep. The temple itself is fairy uninspiring, but the views are astounding. Inside the temple are the alleged footprints of the monkey god Hanuman. You may see some tourists feeding snacks to the hordes of monkeys, but this is not advisable. Two networks of paths lead back to town. Both cut through magnificent forests, but the sinuous paths directly to the right of the temple afford better opportunities for taking detours and enjoying the scenery.

Shimla
