۞ About Palampur :
|
Palampur is a hilly town and municipal council in Kangra district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The kangra valley of which Palampur is a major station, was the ‘Trigarta’ of old. It was one of the leading hill states and was once a part of the kingdom of Jalandhara. Palampur is famous for its picturesque and snow clad mountains and tea gardens. Tea gardens are located between 800-1600 meters above mean sea level. Kangra tea, with its center at Palampur, has been internationally acclaimed since then to further bless the area with
remarkable natural beauty, the Dhauladhar ranges rise dramatically from the earth, just beyond Palampur.

By Air: The airport at Googol (Kangra) is 37 km from Palampur.
By Rail: The broad gauge railway reaches Pathankot which is 115 km from Palampur and the narrow gauge railway comes right upto Moranda, 4 km from the town. Taxis and buses are available at both places.
By Road: Palampur is 545 km from Delhi.

Baijnath: Ancient name of this town was 'Kirgrama'. Baijnath got its name from Shiva Vaidyanatha. The Shiva temple at Baijnath is one of the most remarkable monuments of the kangra valley. The temple consists of an 'Adytum' surrounded by a spire of the usual conical shape with a 'Mandap' covered with a low pyramid shaped roof. The 'Adytum' contains the Lingam. There is fine sculpture work to be associated with Ravana, who worshipped Shiva at this spot and gained immortality. Baijnath is one of the 'Twelve Jyotirlingams'. Shivratri of Baijnath is a well attended fair.

Temple of Bundlamata: One can walk through tea gardens and open fields or drive to reach this historical temple which was originally built about five centuries ago.
Bir and Billing: Bir and Billing village is famous for its Buddhist monasteries. Hang gliding pilots use it as their landing site. Bir, surrounded by tea gardens and an amphitheater of low hills, is an ideal landing around for para-gliders. Bir has Buddhist Monasteries that are worth visiting. Fine Tibetan handi craft are also produced here. Billing, up in the hills 14 kms. from Bir with an arena of 200 kms. for high altitude and cross country flying, is one of the best aerosports sites in the country.

Neugal Khad: Neugal Khad is a famous picnic spot it has a fine view of the Dhauldhar range. Himachal Tourism cafe provides food and a fine view from its restaurant.
Andretta: It is the home of the famous artist, late Sardar Shobha Singh and late playwriter Norah Richards. This presents an excellent view of the Dhauladhar Range.
Shobha Singh's Art Gallery: It is situated in Andhretta which is 13 km. from town.

Chamunda Devi: Legend has it that two demons Chanda and Munda tried to harass the goddess Ambika. Enraged, Ambika knitted her brows and from their folds emerged a terrifying from of Kali, who slew the demons. Pleased, Ambika declared that Kali would now be worshipped here as 'Chamunda'.

Andretta: This has been the home of artist Noarh orchards, Sobha Singh and B. C. Sanyal. In Sobha Singh's home, now a gallery, several of his notable works are dispiayed. Also, there is a pottery and crafts centre at Andretta. |
Neogal Khad: 2km Neugal Khad accords a fine view of the Dhauladhar range. A Himachal Tourism Café provides Tea, Coffee and Snacks.
Bandla: 2 km – spread over an area of 4 kms and the estate has a modern tea factory.
Bundla Stream: 2km – There are some lovely walks around palamjpur and the visitor should not fail to see Bundla stream with a wide chasm of more than 100 meters it swells up and ranges madly in mansoons talking stones a loud Roaring noise like that of a continuous thunder.

Jogindernagar: (40 kms) – The terminus of narrow guage Pathankot Jogindernagar Railway. It is the site of a gaint power house. As you go up height on the slow Ropeway, the view is unmemorable based power station is 5 kms and next to it os Machnial, considered to be a sacred spot.
Tashijong: (10 kms from palampur) Tashing along with Sutlej Valley is a Tibetan Village with Sutlej Valley is a Tibetan Village and a sandalwood figure of Buddha in the THUKURWADA Temple |

Kangra Fort: The fort, 5km from the road bridge. The most important fort of the region, It was built about 1,000 years ago on the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers. It is enclosed by high ramparts and its walls have a circumference of approximately 4 km.
Sujanpur Tira: It was built in 1758 the fortress of Tira Ghar the remnants of old halls, palaces end temple. the town of Sujanpur below the fort, has several old temples of which the Narbadeshwar and Murli Marahar are exemplary.

Best time to visit:
Palampur has a mild climate and can be visited throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Palampur is between March to June and mid-September to November.
