Panaji: The capital City of
Goa – Panaji is located
on the left bank of River
Mandovi. In 1759, the Viceroy
shifted his residence from
Old Goa to Panaji and with
this move the importance
of Panaji increased till
in 1843 it became the capital
of Portuguese India. There
are a number of Churches
in Panaji. Among the famous
Churches is the Church of
Our Lady of Immaculate Conception
in the heart of the town
erected in 1541. Two feasts
are celebrated here every
year. The Shrine of Our
Lady of Fatima is in the
compound of Don Bosco School
Erected in 1970. The Maha-Lakshmi
temple is at the foot of
Altinho Hill. The deity
was installed here in 1817.
The black stone idol depicting
the goddess in her peaceful
form has a silver canopy
on the top. The Maruti Temple
had the deity installed
in 1933. The idol is made
of white marble. A big Fair
is held once a year, when
the deity is taken out in
a Palanquin procession.
Thousands of devotees attend
the Fair. The Jumma Masjid
was renovated in 1935. It
is in the heart of the Town,
The Muslim festivals are
celebrated in the Mosque.
The most famous Beach of
Panaji is the Miramer Beach
which is along the Mandovi
River. The palm and pine
studded beach has a lovely
view of the sunset. Dona
Paul'a rock has been developed
as a Tourist Spot. A flight
of steps lead to the marmorite
rock statue titled 'Image
of India' depicting a Man
facing West and a Woman
Facing East. The Man's clothes
are caught in a Chakra depicting
the past. From the top platform
one gets a lovely view of
Murmagoa harbour and the
Arabian Sea. A famous statue
of Abbe Faria sculpted in
bronze has been erected
overlooking the Mandovi
River towards the left of
the Secretariat Building.
A bust of the famous Goan
Journalist Menezes Braganza
and a Bronze Statue of Francisco
Lius Gomez have been installed
in Panaji. The Cabo Raj-Niwas
is now the residence of
the Governor of Goa. It
js a historical fort built
with Francisco boulders
and masonry. The built up
area of the main building
is 1435 squaremeters. A
beautiful 3150 square meter's
garden is in front of the
building.
Paroda: Paroda village is 11
kilometers from Margoa.
There is the famous Chandranath
Temple constructed on a
348 meters high hill. The
Bhoja rulers of Goa named
their Capital Chandrapur
alter this famous deity.
The Shivalinga in the sanctum
is carved out of stone and
on full moon day the moon
beams fall directly on the
Shivalinga. An ancient beautifully
carved chariot of the Lord
is well preserved in the
Temple. An annual well-attended
fair is held to pay homage
to the Lord. Closeby to
this is a small temple dedicated
to Bhutnath. The deity is
in a standing posture gazing
at Lord Chandranath.
Pernem: Pernem Town has the
famous 500 years old Bhagavati
Temple. Two life size statues
of elephants carved out
of single blocks of stone
guard the entrance to the
temple. In the sanctum is
the standing posture idol
of Goddess Bhagavati. During
Dushehera and Shigmo Festivals,
a large number of people
pay homage to the deity.
Poingunim: Poingunim town has the
ancient Temple of Parshuram.
A black round stone is worshipped
as Parshuram in the sanctum,
The Golan Partgal Jeevotlam
Math has the Shrine of virvitthal
as well as the Temple of
Ramadeva. The Shrine of
Maruti is facing the Math.
Ponda: Ponda Town is situated
29 kilometers from Panaji.
The Town has a famous Safa
Shahouri Masjid building
in 1560 by Adilshah of Bijapur.
The Mosque has a square
stone maŽsonry tank with
chambers for dressing. The
major Muslim festivals are
celebrated here. The Ponda
Fort is now a famous picnic
spot. The Original Fort
was said to have been built
by the Bijapur rulers. It
was destroyed in 1549 by
the Portuguese. Shivaji
conquered it from the Portuguese
in May 1683 and rebuilt
the Fort. In 1682, the Fort.
was destroyed by Sambhaji
in his Wars with the Portuguese.
He rebuilt a stronger Fort
called Mardangad, the ruins
of which are now a picnic
spot.
