Anjidiv:
The Island of Anjidiv is
in Canacona Taluka of Goa.
The Portuguese, before they
conquered Goa, used it in
their early days as a station
fir repairing and watering
their ships. It is small
island with two pools of
water. One of them has a
natural spring which supplies
drinking water. The channel
between this island and
the mainland is navigable
by ships. In 1682 the Portuguese
built a fort on this island.
It protected the mainland
from the Maratha ruler Sambhaji.
Later on this island was
used as a penal settlement
for Goa by the Portuguese.On
19th November,1961,
the Indian Navy Fought the
Portuguese navy here and
there were some casualities
on both side. The Portuguese
ship Afonso de Albuquerque
was disabled in this naval
fight. There is a church
with three altars on the
island. It was constructed
in 1506 by the first Portuguese
Viceroy Dom Francisco de
Almedia.
Anjuna:
Anjuna village is in Bardez
Taluk, about 10 Kilo meters
from Mapusa. The famous
Chopra Fort is at a high
point on the South of the
mouth of River Chapora.
The construction of the
Fort was started in 1717.
The Fort dominates the surroundings.

The Fort overlooks
the Vogator Beach. The Beach
is fringed with palms and
approachable by a metalled
road.
Arvalem:
Arvalem village is about
three kilometer from Sanquelim.The
Rudreshvar Temple is surrounded
by
a
grove of arecanut trees.
A stream of water passes
by the stairs and forms
a beautiful waterfall about
70 feet high. big lake forms
at the bottom of the fall.
There is a massive gateway
at the entrance of the temple
which faces east. There
is a Shivlinga in the Santum.
Dramas are staged at the
temple on Mahashivratri
day.
The Arvalem Caves nearby
are another place for tourist
to visit. These rockcut
caves belong to the 6th
and 7th century. There are
three major caves. The Central
Cave has three shrines.
The front hall has 4 massive
square pillars. The northernmost
Cave has a square shrine
with a Linga placed on a
platform. The Linga is of
granite and has a rounded
tip. The Southernmost Cave
has in its centre a Laterite
platfrrm with a cylindrical
Linga narrowing at the top.
The northernmost shrine
of the Central Cave has
a square laterite platform
and has a peculiar 4 moulding
Linga. This Linga is tetragonal
at the base, followed by
a pentagonal and a rectangular
moulding with a circular
disc at the top. There is
a inscription in Brahmi
script. The Central Shrine
of this Cave has a platform
with a two mould Linga with
a circular top portion of
about 18 inches and a square
base. The Southern Shrine
of this Cave has another
unconventional Linga. It
is similar to the one with
the inscription except that
the top ends in a spearhead.
Bandora:
Bandora village is about
3 kilometers from Ponda.
The Mahalakshmi Temple is
in the middle of the village.
The main gate has above
it the nagarkhana (drum
chamber). A row of five
pillars and a pilaster on
each side support the main
hall of the temple. There
is a gallery with rare 18
wooden images of the Vaishnavitecult.
The main idol is of black
stone. By its side is an
idol of Narayan. On festive
days dramas are performed
in the night.
By the side of this temple
is the Nagesh Temple with
three entrances facing East,
West and South. Three entrance
door of the temple has stone
sculptures fixed on the
hall is supported by 4 pillars
and a pilaster on each side.
There is a gallery on both
sides with intricate wood
carvings depicting scenes
from Ramayana on one side.

Marathi Inscription of 24th
December 1413 of King Devaray
I is found in front of the
temple. Another Temple
nearby is that of Ramnath.
This temple has a big hall
with hanging galleries,
and a stage from which dramas
are performed during the
festive season. In the sanctum
is a Linga of Ramnath and
an image of Lakshminarayan.
There are other shrines
of ancillary deities. On
Mahashivaratri, over 5000
people collect to celebrate
the Festival. There is a
procession of deities carried
on palanquins during this
festival.
Calangute:
Calangute village in Bardez
Taluka is famous for Calangute
and Baga beach which is
linked by a mettaled road
with the main road. The
twin beaches stretch for
more than 7kms. Of gold
sand fringed with coconut
trees. A number of bars
and restaurant along with
hotels ring the beaches.
This is one of the most
popular area from the Tourist
angle. The early morning
breeze is very bracing and
the sight of the fishermen
taking in their catch unforgettable.
Canacona:
Canacona town forms
a part of the municipal
town of Chawri. The Mallikarjun
Temple was rebuilt on an
older site in 1781. The
temple has a sanctum covered
with a dome and a shikara
surrounded by an inner room
and an outer assembly hall.
There is a chowk in between
the sanctum and the hall.
This chowk has massive carved
wooden pillars. There is
a gallery full of wooden
images. There is a black
stone Nandi facing the sanctum
which has a one foot high
Linga covered with a silver
plated canopy with creaper
designs. The door frame
of the sanctum is silver
plated with designs and
figures of Saraswati on
both sides. On the lintal
is a figure of Ganpati.
On Shivratri a festival
is held and dramas are staged.
Candolim:
Candolim Town in Bardez
Taluka is Famous because
of its excellent beach and
the fortress of Augada.
Augada Fort was erected
in 1612. It encloses the
summit of a rocky head land
260 feet above sea level.
There are many fountains
and wells in the Fort from
which in olden times water
used to be supplied to ships.
On the highest point of
the fort is a citadel with
a light-house in the form
of a circular tower with
the light revolving once
every seven seconds. The
tower also support a huge
clock with a bell. The fort
has two powder rooms, two
magazines, two prisons and
many buildings to house
the troops and officers.
There is also a huge square
cistern on the Fort. It
has five compartments with
16 columns supporting the
vaulted roof. During the
Liberation Movement against
the Portuguese, the Fort
served as a prison for the
freedom fighters. The fort
is now used as a Central
Jail.
