Goa’s culture is deeply influenced
by Portuguese culture. There is
a strong bond between Christian
and Hindu communities. Both the
communities participates and enjoy
the same festivals and share the
same coustoms. In Goan there are
many differences between the habits
and conduct of each group.
Every year more than one million
visitors visits Goa. The traditional
life of Goa is disappearing very
rapidly. It is quite amazing that
there are very few families and
communities who really observe the
ritual as others do not.

Marriage:
The same process is undertaken by
both Christian and
Hindu communities to choose a suitable
partner for a son or daughter. Dowries
are still given in weddings by bride’s
family in both the communities.
Intercaste marriages are more acceptable
if there is a good dowry given by
the bride’s family. The wedding
ceremony is a lengthy and a noisy
affair. There are manuy ritual held
at the time of marriage like Kanyadana,
while water and silver coins are
poured over the clasped hands of
bride and groom. And then the final
ritual Saptapadi takes place in
which the couple walks around the
sacred fire.

Christian wedding has borrowed from Hindu traditions,
such as
ritual bathing of the bride before the wedding.
Traditional Green bracelet is wore by married
women. Both the communities follow almost the
same rituals of marriage.
