and Periodicals published
from 1821 to 1935 in Goa.
According to this list,

in addition to 17 private

Goa's rebirth as a modern
territory with an ancient
background really began
with the arrival of the
post Lib eration era: it
would seem that with freedom,
a new zest had been imparted
to a long op-pressed people
to flour ish in their respective
creative world of arts,
especially the performing
ones.
In
the past, one had hardly
heard of 'Ranmale' of Satari,
'Ghade-Madni' of Bicholim
and 'Bhadap' of Cancona
or even the Kunbi dance
which has attained a measure
of popularity during the
20th. century. During the
post-Liberation period,
Goans dance with gay abandon
on various occasions -whether
it is Shigmo or Carnival,
Ghada-Modni or Corridinho,
Fugdi or Dekni and Mando
or Jagor.
Goa has a galaxy of artists,
writers, poets, philosophers,
doctors, and scientists
who have earned names for
themselves. In this context,
the names of Kesarbai Kerkar,
Ramakrishnabuwa Vaze, Mogubai
Kurdikar, Khapruman Parvatkar
might be mentioned; and
to this list could be added
others like Kishori Amonkar,
Master Dinanath Mangeshkar,
Jitendra Abhisheki, Maneka
Shirodkar, the Mangeshkar
sisters. In the field of
painting and drawing the
names of persons like Newton
D'souza, Angela Trindade,
Raghuvir Mulgaokar, Angeloz
Fon-seca, Laxman Pai and
Mario Miranda might be mentioned.
In the field of music, musicians
like Noel Flores, Olga Athaide
Craen, Dominic Pereira,
Mar-garida Miranda and Mercedes
Loba along with several
other have distinguished
themselves.
During the post-Liberation
period, there has been an
on-going search for talent
through school, college
and institutional level
contests in Marathi and
Konkani dramas and Tiatr.
Goa also has its own Symphony
Orchestra which gives performances
in Goa, Bombay and Pune
while the Kala Academy encourages
Kathak and Bharat-Natyam
performances. And to house
the activities of the Academy,
a well-designed massive
and yet, elegant structure
with a whole range of infrastructural
requirements was designed
by the Bombay-based designer
Charles Correa whose origin
roots apparently are in
Goa. This magnificent complex
is air-conditioned and has
a seating capacity of 1000,
a mini-theatre and an open
air theatre for 2500. The
campus has excellent recording
facilities, an art gallery,
library of music and books
and, quite often, classical
Indian music and dance is
held on the banks of the
placid Mandovi river.
