one - to bring out the extent
to which Goa has developed
its Cultural and Literary

Libraries
and Museums
Goa has over 100 Libraries
including the Central Library
run by the Government at
Panaji. This Library was
started in 1832 under the
name of 'Biblioteca National
Vasco da Gama' but, after
Liberation, was re-named
Central Library. Interestingly,
during the year 1973-74,
Goa's libraries covered
approximately 5,86,157 readers.
To preserve Goa's long historical
and cultural heritage the
Department of archives and
Archeology and Museums is
vested with the responsibility
to maintain and preserve
the records of various government
agencies. The Achieves Office
contains in its repository
source material relating
to the history of Goa, its
relations with South-East
Asia and Africa under the
Portuguese rule. Centralization
of records of this type
is a massive exercise especially
when one considers the fact
that near 100,000 records
will form part of this wealth
of recorded data.
