Agra in situated
on the west bank of the Yamuna
River, 204 km south of Delhi.
The old part of the town is
north of the fort where the
Kinari Bazaar, the main market
place, is located in a narrow
street. The cantonment area to
the south is the modern part of
town, known as Sadar Bazaar.
Here you will find the
Government of India Tourist
Office at 191 The Mall. The GPO
and poste restante is also on
The Mall and in this area you
will find handicraft shops,
restaurants and many moderately
priced hotels. Deluxe buses for
Delhi and Jaipur also operate
from here.
There are also some lower priced
hotels and the Tourist Bungalow
near the Raja Mandi railway
station but this area is rather
inconveniently located.
It's far from
both the Taj and the main hotel
and restaurant area. The
'tourist class' hotels are
mainly in the spacious areas of
Taj Ganj, south of the Taj
itself. Immediately south of the
Taj there is a tightly packed
area of narrow alleys where you
can also find some popular
rock-bottom hotels.
Agra's main railway station is
Agra Cantonment and it is here
that trains from New Delhi
arrive. The main bus station for
cities in Rajasthan and for
Fatehpur Sikri is Idgah. The
Fort Bus Station has buses going
to Mathura. Indian Airlines is
in the Hotel Clarks Shiraz. Agra
airport is seven km out of town.
